“In local knowledge systems, the plant world is not artificially separated between a forest supplying commercial wood and agricultural land supplying food commodities. The forest and the field are in ecological continuum, and activities in the forest contribute to the food needs of the local community, while agriculture itself is modeled on the ecology of the tropical forest. Some forest dwellers gather food directly from the forest, while many communities practice agriculture outside the forest but depend on the fertility of the forest for the fertility of agricultural land.”
