Niugtaq, 1974: Twining a Yup’ik Issran, or grass-carrying basket. The weave is likely sweetgrass (Hierochloe odorata) or coarse seashore grass (taperrnaq). Other locally harvested grasses are from a range of long reed-like grasses that grow along rivers and streams. Such skill is more than craft, although originally useful weaves are generally replaced today by imported plastic containers. Many such everyday techniques are now held as final objects by private collectors and museums.
